And now, according to the latest reports, Barani University, in collaboration with the Punjab government and the Ministry of Science and Technology, has drawn up a major plan to make cannabis widely used as a raw material in the pharmaceutical and textile industries.
Under the scheme, cannabis will be cultivated extensively under government auspices and its leaves and twigs will be used as fodder along with plastics, yarn, pharmaceuticals and other industries. The government will soon legislate in this regard. According to experts, the use of cannabis in industries will be a great revolution.
The question is, are we going to do something new? If we look around the world, a conservative estimate is that the cannabis business currently stands at ارب 25 billion. Another major decision of Khan for the development of the country is the establishment of border markets in the Pak-Afghan and Pak-Iran border areas. There will be 12 border markets on the Pak-Afghan border, six on the Pak-Iran border, two in Balochistan and one in KP. Establishing these markets at the border will help eliminate smuggling. According to an estimate, goods worth Rs 60 to 100 billion from India alone and up to Rs 3 trillion from China are harmed and our economy suffers. In addition to establishing markets at the border, the Presidential Ordinance is planning to impose the harshest punishments on those involved in smuggling, not only to help curb smuggling but also to crack down on those involved in this nefarious scam. It should also be easy to set an example for others by giving punishments.
There is a need to ensure that cannabis is not misused. In addition, legislation should be such that future governments cannot amend it under pressure from the mafia. Continuity of government initiatives is the key to our progress. It is the duty of every Pakistani to cooperate with the state as much as possible instead of making fun of it.
